New Year! New Me!

“ To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” – Anatole France

2013 is here!!! As I prepare for my first figure competition, so many emotions are running through me.  From OMG I am so close to oh shit am I ready?

The other day I thought to myself, “Vee you are actually living IN your dream. Right in the midst of accomplishing a goal you set for yourself in 2003 before you really knew what competitive bodybuilding was all about.”  I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. This is more than 10 years in the making with most of the hard work done within the last two years. Most of the time we go through this life just living day to day.  But to be aware and in the moment is a whole different feeling. Feels good to have come this far.

For the next couple of weeks, it’s about focusing. Something I struggle with but I’m finding ways to improve this particular area in my life. Focusing requires having a plan and then taking the time to execute items on that plan. Compartmentalizing helps as well. Do one thing at a time until you’re ready to move on to the next task.

I have a daily checkoff list I go through everyday.  Honestly, I don’t hit every item all the time but I know what I have to be focused on:

  1. Being thankful  – Starting my day on a positive note has really helped me change my perspective on life.  I have taken the time to look at things from different angles and just be thankful for all I have right now.
  2. Eat on time – Make sure I get all my meals in and don’t eat no bullshit as my trainer Roc would so eloquently state.
  3. Drink my water – Make sure I get my daily water intake
  4. Train and cardio – hit it hard and as planned
  5. Rest, Recovery, & Stretch – All that training and cardio is in vain if I don’t give my body time to rest.
  6. Posing – Practicing 3 to 4 times a week for 15 to 20 mins makes sure I am confident on stage
  7. Visualization – Before I go to bed I try to see myself on stage. This has been a little challenging for me since I’ve never been onstage before. But I still try to imagine how I want to look and feel when I get up there. How effortlessly my turns are and how I hit each pose. They say it all starts in the mind first!!

For the next 8 weeks, it’s do or die time…these next weeks are what separate the winners from losers. I have to keep digging deep and remember why I am doing this.

If it means I cannot hang out or meet up with friends anymore because I need my rest and mental focus, then that’s what I must do. Over the past two years I have sacrificed time, money, and efforts (as well as giving up eating foods I thought I enjoyed at one time) and now with the goal only at arm’s length, this helps me avoid temptations.  This whole adventure is about me becoming a better version of Veronica.
